It is known to us that 41 NYSC Corps Members were Sanctioned for Misconduct in Bayelsa – 2024 Batch B Stream 1: The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa State has taken disciplinary action against 41 corps members from the 2024 Batch B, Stream 1 for misconduct during their one-year national service. These corps members were found guilty of breaking NYSC rules such as absenteeism, disobedience to officials, and abandoning their places of primary assignment (PPA) without proper permission.
As punishment, 14 corps members had their service year extended, meaning they will have to spend extra months serving. Meanwhile, 27 others were completely re-mobilized, which means they will start the entire NYSC programme all over again in a future batch. This announcement was made by the NYSC State Coordinator in Bayelsa, Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, during the Passing-Out Parade (POP) ceremony held in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The event marked the official end of the service year for hundreds of corps members who were posted to different parts of Bayelsa for their national assignment. The POP ceremony was attended by special guests, including Dr. Wisdom Poyeri, the Executive Assistant to the Bayelsa State Governor on NYSC Matters, along with other state officials and community leaders.
While addressing the corps members, Mrs. Okpalifo shared a congratulatory message from the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, thanking the majority of corps members for serving the country faithfully. She highlighted how many of them made great contributions in areas like education, healthcare, community development, and other key sectors in Bayelsa State, despite challenges they may have faced.
She praised their commitment and dedication, adding that their positive attitude during service reflected the true spirit of the NYSC programme. According to her, the actions of the disciplined corps members should serve as a warning to others, reminding everyone that obedience, discipline, and dedication are very important during the service year.

Mrs. Okpalifo also used the opportunity to remind the corps members about the importance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which is a key part of the NYSC scheme. This programme trains corps members in practical skills such as fashion design, ICT, agriculture, hairdressing, baking, and business management, to help them become self-reliant after service. She encouraged them to make good use of these skills to create jobs for themselves and others, instead of depending only on government jobs or waiting for white-collar jobs.
She advised the outgoing corps members to stay safe after service, especially when traveling. “Avoid traveling at night and always use approved motor parks,” she warned, pointing out that being careful can help reduce road accidents and keep them safe from criminal activities.
Mrs. Okpalifo also appreciated the Bayelsa State Government and the local communities for being supportive and peaceful throughout the service year. She mentioned that the calm and friendly environment in the state helped corps members carry out their duties successfully. She thanked community leaders, employers, and security agencies who worked together with NYSC to ensure that corps members were safe and well taken care of during the service period.
One of the key highlights of the event was the presentation of commendation letters to a few corps members who performed exceptionally well in their various places of assignment. These special corps members stood out because of their hard work, positive attitude, and the impact they made in the communities where they served. Also, the official Certificates of National Service (CNS) were presented to all the corps members who completed their service year successfully. This certificate is proof that they have fulfilled their national duty.
The NYSC programme, which started in 1973, continues to promote unity, national development, and youth empowerment in Nigeria. Even though some corps members were punished for misconduct, the fact that many others completed their service successfully shows that the programme is still making a difference.
