ASUU Strike Update 2025: What I Know About the 14-Day Ultimatum: I want to talk about what’s currently happening with ASUU because many people are already worried about another possible strike. From what I’ve gathered, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again warned the Federal Government, saying they might go on a two-week warning strike if nothing serious is done soon.
This latest announcement has already stirred a lot of reactions online and in schools, as both students and lecturers are anxious to know if another ASUU strike is really coming.
ASUU Gives Government 14 Days to Act
I have seen in the new Strike Bulletin No. 1 that ASUU released after their NEC meeting on 29th September 2025, the union gave the government 14 days to meet their demands.
Let’s say it plainly — ASUU is tired of promises that are never fulfilled. The union mentioned that they sent a renegotiated agreement to the government way back in February 2025, but up till now, there has been no concrete action.
So, the 14-day ultimatum is more like a final warning. If the government doesn’t act fast, I think we might start seeing another round of strike action.
Why ASUU Is Frustrated Again
From my understanding, this issue isn’t new. ASUU has been having the same conversation with the government for years. They keep holding meetings with the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Education, and even the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) — yet, nothing much comes out of it.
And because of that, ASUU believes it’s time to take a stand again. I will say it looks like the union is tired of waiting for results that never come. So if nothing changes before the deadline, they will likely start a two-week warning strike to push the government into action.
When Exactly Will the ASUU Strike Start?
Now, let’s check the timeline properly. Since the 14-day ultimatum started on 29th September 2025, it means that by 13th October 2025, the warning period will end.
If by then the government still doesn’t meet ASUU’s demands, the union has said it will begin its two-week warning strike right after. So, for anyone asking “When will ASUU strike start?” — it could be mid-October 2025, depending on how the government responds.
What the ASUU President Said
In the bulletin signed by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, the union made it clear that they are not doing this to make life hard for students. Instead, they want the government to do the right thing and make sure public universities are properly funded and maintained.
He also told members to stay calm, stay united, and get ready for whatever comes next. ASUU members were reminded to take updates only from branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators to avoid fake information spreading online.
What Happens If the Government Ignores ASUU?
Honestly, if the government still does nothing before the ultimatum ends, I think the strike will go ahead as planned. ASUU has already said they are not going back on their demand for the government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement.
For example, this same kind of situation has happened in the past, where the government delayed, and ASUU eventually went on strike to get attention. So, I won’t be surprised if that happens again this time.
The union also encouraged its members across all universities to stay strong and ready, ending the bulletin with their famous slogan:
“United we bargain, divided we beg. Solidarity forever!”
