NECO Summons 40 Schools Over Mass Cheating in SSCE: The National Examination Council (NECO) has announced plans to summon the administrators of 40 secondary schools across 17 states due to suspected widespread cheating in the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
NECO’s Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, revealed this during a press briefing in Minna, Niger State, where he also shared the release of the 2024 SSCE results.
Prof. Wushishi reported that 8,437 candidates were involved in exam malpractice this year, a significant drop from 12,030 cases in 2023, reflecting a 30.1% decrease.
He emphasized that schools implicated in these acts would be called for a meeting with NECO, and necessary penalties would follow after discussions.
Additionally, 21 supervisors from 12 states were recommended for blacklisting due to misconduct, including poor supervision, aiding malpractice, extortion, and other forms of negligence.
On a positive note, over 60% of the students who took the 2024 NECO SSCE passed both English Language and Mathematics.
Prof. Wushishi also provided data on the candidates, stating that a total of 1,376,423 students registered, with 706,950 being male and 669,473 female.
