No Boyfriend, No Distractions: Wesley University’s Best Graduate Shares Her Success Secret: A 19-year-old student, Miss Ifeoluwa Adeyemi, has shared how staying focused and avoiding distractions helped her graduate as the top student in the 2023/2024 academic session at Wesley University in Ondo State.
Adeyemi, who earned a degree in microbiology, achieved a remarkable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97.
In an interview with PUNCH Online after the university’s 13th convocation ceremony on Saturday, Adeyemi explained how she stayed focused on her studies. She mentioned that having a boyfriend during her undergraduate years would have taken her attention away from her academic goals.
She said, “I’ve talked about this with others, and people have different opinions, but for me, a boyfriend would be a distraction. I can’t divide my attention. A boyfriend could take up my time, and I wouldn’t be able to focus fully on my studies.”
Aside from avoiding distractions, Adeyemi’s main motivation was her desire to make her parents proud.
“First of all, I have parents I can’t disappoint. That was always in my mind. Whenever I felt distracted, I reminded myself that my parents were counting on me, and I needed to make them proud,” she explained.
Her passion for the health sector also played a key role in her success. Adeyemi dedicated herself to microbiology, a field focused on microorganisms and their connection to diseases and health.
“I had to stay focused on my course. Microbiology is an important area in health, and I knew I had to work hard to understand it,” she said
Looking to the future, Adeyemi shared her plans to continue her studies by pursuing a Master’s degree and eventually a PhD.
“The next step is to continue my education — a Master’s, and then a Ph.D. I want to become a researcher,” she added.
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor of Wesley University, Professor Sunday Obeka, highlighted the university’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education based on Wesleyan values. He encouraged the graduates to uphold excellence, integrity, and service in their future careers.
