Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has made a landmark announcement that is already generating excitement among students and graduates of Abia State University (ABSU). During the university’s combined 30th to 32nd convocation ceremony held in Uturu, the governor unveiled a series of opportunities designed to reward academic excellence and empower young graduates for the future.
From automatic employment offers to postgraduate scholarships and business funding support, the initiative signals a strong commitment to education, youth development, and economic growth in Abia State.
Automatic Employment for First-Class Graduates
Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Governor Otti revealed that all graduates who finished with First Class honours would be offered automatic lecturing appointments as Graduate Assistants after completing their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
According to him, the decision aims to retain brilliant minds within the academic system while strengthening teaching and research capacity at ABSU.
He explained that the opportunity would also extend to the best graduating students across departments who achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.25, ensuring that outstanding academic performance does not go unrewarded.
For many students, this announcement represents more than recognition — it provides a clear career pathway immediately after graduation, something rarely seen in Nigerian universities.
Postgraduate Scholarships Up to PhD Level
Beyond employment, the governor also approved postgraduate scholarships for all First-Class graduates from the three convocation sets. Beneficiaries will be sponsored up to doctoral level in any public university of their choice within Nigeria.
However, the scholarship offer is tied to acceptance of the teaching appointments, a move designed to encourage graduates to contribute to academic development while advancing their education.

₦200 Million Business Grant for Young Entrepreneurs
Recognising that not every graduate may choose an academic career, Governor Otti also introduced a ₦200 million business support fund targeted at young entrepreneurs.
The initiative will support up to 100 graduates with innovative and viable business ideas, particularly in sectors considered critical for economic growth such as agriculture, information technology, and clean energy.
Interested applicants are required to submit their business proposals electronically on or before April 30, 2026. The programme is expected to encourage self-employment, innovation, and job creation among young people.
₦5 Million Award for Overall Best Graduating Student
In a personal show of appreciation for academic excellence, the governor presented a ₦5 million cash award to the overall best graduating student, Mrs. Oluchi Etusim.
The recognition highlighted the administration’s belief that hard work and dedication should be visibly rewarded, serving as motivation for current and future students.
69 First-Class Graduates Emerge at Combined Convocation
A total of 69 students graduated with First-Class honours across the 30th, 31st, and 32nd convocation ceremonies. The university also recorded 3,973 graduates with Second Class Upper Division and 4,764 with Second Class Lower Division.
Additionally, 195 students earned Third-Class honours, while only one graduand finished with a pass degree. Overall, the ceremony celebrated 10,255 graduates, including 690 postgraduate students.
The impressive academic statistics reflect steady progress in academic performance and institutional development.
Infrastructure Development and Educational Reforms at ABSU
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming ABSU into a globally competitive institution. As part of ongoing reforms, he flagged off the reconstruction of the ABSU International Secondary School and inaugurated a 5-megawatt power substation aimed at solving long-standing electricity challenges on campus.
University leadership, including the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, and Vice-Chancellor, commended the governor for improved staff welfare, timely salary payments, and sustained infrastructural investments.
