UNN Dismissed Allegations of Admission Irregularities: The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has strongly denied the recent allegations suggesting that its 2025/2026 admission process was full of irregularities. The management described those claims as completely false and intended to tarnish the good name and reputation of the institution that has stood for academic integrity for decades.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Inya Egwu, made this known in a statement released on Thursday. He explained that the admission process at UNN is not something done secretly or carelessly. According to him, the entire process is closely monitored, supervised, and validated by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), making it very transparent and fair for all applicants.
Let’s stay, for example, you apply to study any course at UNN — the university does not handle that alone. JAMB plays a key role by ensuring that every stage of admission follows due process. That means from the screening to the final admission list, nothing is done without the board’s oversight.
“The University of Nigeria does not conduct its admission process in isolation. Every stage is monitored, supervised, and validated by JAMB,” the statement read in part.
In the clarification, the university also explained that admissions are given strictly based on a nationally approved quota system. This system divides admission chances into different categories, with specific cut-off marks for each one.
For instance, in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, the university set different cut-off marks depending on the admission category. According to the official statement, the cut-off marks range between 282.3 and 338.0, which clearly shows that not every candidate will fall under the same benchmark.
To make things clearer, admissions into federal universities, including UNN, are guided by a national quota policy. The policy states that 45% of admission slots go to merit, 35% to catchment areas (that is, nearby states or localities), and the remaining 20% to Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS).
In line with that national rule, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UNN approved the following cut-off marks for Medicine and Surgery: Merit – 338.0; Catchment areas such as Enugu – 334.5; Anambra – 331.6; Imo – 333.1; Abia – 326.5; Ebonyi – 314.2; Delta – 315.8; and Akwa Ibom – 282.3.
With respect to the ELDS category, the statement added that the following cut-off points were used: Taraba – 312.1; Rivers – 295.4; Kogi – 294.6; Bayelsa – 317.3; Niger – 287.9; Cross River – 287.7; Benue – 282.4; Gombe – 282.4; Kaduna – 280.3; and Katsina – 283.3.
When you look at these figures, it becomes very clear that UNN follows the national admission policy as expected. It is not true that the institution favors any particular group. Each state, based on its category, has its own fair cut-off point.
Egwu went on to say that over 600 candidates scored above 300 in Medicine and Surgery alone, which totally contradicts the circulating rumors that only ten candidates reached a score above 338. He emphasized that such claims are misleading and aimed at creating confusion among candidates who are waiting for their admission.
Let’s check it — if more than 600 candidates scored above 300, it means competition is truly high, and it will be unrealistic to expect everyone to be admitted at once. That is why UNN applies merit, catchment, and ELDS policies to balance opportunities fairly.
He finally assured all prospective students that the university will continue to maintain transparency and fairness in its admission process. “We remain committed to the principles of merit and national fairness. No candidate will be denied admission unjustly,” he concluded.
