WAEC Celebrates 3 Outstanding WASSCE Students with 9As: The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has rewarded three exceptional students for their remarkable performance in the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The students, who each achieved 9As, were recognized during the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Nigeria National Committee (NNC) of WAEC, held at the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) Conference Hall, Kaduna State.
The top prize was awarded to Whiskey Orevaoghene, an 18-year-old student from Topfaith International Secondary School, Mkpatak, Akwa Ibom. She emerged as the best overall student, achieving a total T-score of 628.3248 in the May/June 2023 WASSCE. In addition to this remarkable achievement, she scored 340 in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and is currently studying Medicine and Surgery at the University of Port Harcourt.
The second position went to Okafor Chima Christian, a 17-year-old from St. Paul’s Academy, Jos, Plateau State. He earned 8As and a T-score of 605.4081. Chima is currently pursuing Medicine and Surgery at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
In third place is Alinnor Ifunanya Jessica, a 17-year-old student from Loyola Jesuit College, Wuse, Abuja. She also achieved 8As with a T-score of 601.9246. Alinnor further excelled in the 2024 UTME with a score of 345 and is now studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Tennessee University, USA, on a merit scholarship.
Honoring Visually Impaired Students
WAEC also recognized two visually impaired students for their outstanding performance in the 2023 WASSCE.
- Male Category: The award was given to 19-year-old Opu Sylvester Iforulimre from Demonstration Secondary School, Federal College of Education, Obudu, Cross River State. He achieved 2As, 3Bs, and 2Cs in his results.
- Female Category: 18-year-old Banjo Fiyinfoluwa Emmanuella from Starfield College, Fagba, Lagos, was celebrated for earning 4As, 2Bs, and 1C.
WAEC’s Commitment to Excellence
During the event, the Head of National Office (HNO) for WAEC, Dr. Amos Dangut, highlighted the pivotal role of the NNC, which serves as the highest policy-making body of the council in Nigeria. He reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as Africa’s leading examination body and assured stakeholders of the council’s continued dedication to excellence.
The Chairman of the NNC, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, noted that WAEC had introduced numerous initiatives to ensure the smooth conduct of its examinations.
Kaduna State’s Role in Education
The Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, declared the NNC meeting open. The governor emphasized the importance of education in his administration, reflected in the state’s allocation of 24% of its budget to the education sector.
Governor Sani also expressed concern over the rising cases of examination malpractice and urged WAEC to implement more effective measures to address the issue.
“We encourage WAEC to continue creating strategies to tackle malpractice. Meanwhile, our government will remain focused on improving school environments and promoting parental involvement to ensure proper guidance for our students,” he stated.
The governor further described WAEC as a cornerstone of educational progress in the West African region, fostering collaboration among nations and setting high standards for academic success.
