JAMB Announces 2025 Mop-Up Examination for UTME Absentees: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced a special mop-up examination for candidates who missed the recently concluded 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This development comes as a relief to the thousands of candidates – representing over 5.6% of the total registered population – who were unable to participate in the exam due to various challenges.

The announcement was made by the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that the new mop-up exercise is part of the Board’s commitment to fairness and inclusivity in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions process.
“This time, we’re initiating a fresh mop-up. Even candidates who were absent for any reason will have the opportunity to write the exam,” Oloyede stated. “It’s not an extraordinary gesture. In any functional academic system, make-up exams are normal – so long as the process is not abused.”
Professor Oloyede further emphasized that the UTME is not designed to test intelligence but to serve as a ranking tool for limited admission slots in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
“The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is a placement exam. It’s not a measure of intelligence or academic potential. Its core purpose is to rank candidates fairly for available admission spaces,” he noted.
This announcement addresses growing concerns and criticism over the conduct of the 2025 UTME, with some candidates and stakeholders alleging ethnic bias and administrative lapses. The JAMB Registrar firmly dismissed these allegations, reaffirming the Board’s commitment to transparency and national unity.
“I take responsibility, not because I have failed, but because leadership demands it. I was surprised to learn that some viewed recent events through ethnic lenses. We must rise above such profiling and focus on building an equitable system,” Oloyede stated firmly.
Despite several logistical challenges that accompanied the 2025 UTME exercise – including limited examination centres and technical hitches – JAMB commended both candidates and staff for their resilience and understanding.
“We had serious constraints, especially with space and logistics. But instead of dwelling on those issues, we focused on ensuring that no candidate was denied an opportunity due to avoidable setbacks,” the Registrar added.
The JAMB mop-up exam 2025 is expected to be scheduled soon, and affected candidates are advised to stay alert for official updates on the examination date and venues. JAMB has assured the public that all necessary arrangements will be made to ensure a smooth, fair, and transparent process.
