The news about the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarking on a strike recently has brought a shock to so many students and Parents around the country Nigeria, as some panic and pray that this time the government of Nigeria shouldn’t allow the ASUU strike to begin again.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are currently engaged in a Zonal meeting which started on the 19th of February, 2024 and the theme of the meeting shows that ASUU is still battling with the Federal Government of Nigeria on how to recover their 8 months unpaid Salary and also to gain an increment of salary to meet up with their daily needs due to the current hardship in the country.
According to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), out of the seven and a half months of salaries delayed, only a few staff members received an amputated two-month salary from the federal government.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), confirmed the development to Channels Television on Monday and stated that data on the payment is still being gathered.
He further explained that Since the government claims to start paying the held salary, only a few staff have confirmed payment and it is only 2 months Withheld salary they have received so far.
Remember, that the longest strike in the union’s history was the 2022 ASUU strike that started on February 14, 2022, and lasted on October 17, 2022.
A whole academic session was lost due to the strike and because of that the academic institutions are still struggling how to fill in the gaps and issues this has caused already, so going on a strike again will be a brutal attack on the Academic calendar again, which will cost a lost in one academic year in all federal universities and some state universities who are under ASUU.
Recall that the major reason why ASUU went on a strike in 2022 was to seek better working conditions, higher compensation for professors, and increased funding for universities.
His remarks followed President Bola Tinubu’s October 2023 approval of the release of four of the eight months’ worth of salary that ASUU had withheld from its employees.
When certain ASUU unions went on an eight-month strike in 2022, the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari invoked the “No Work, No Pay policy” and withheld the salary.
